Thursday, April 23, 2009 Headed for the Wal-Mart, King Arthur, Lucky Phone Call
Well we are on the road and headed for the Wal-Mart in Burlington, VT. With everything still closed for the season, it’s the closest place that we have found for us to stay near the Maple Festival in St. Albans.
We spent the morning trying to find a place to park when we get to St. Albans. The folks at the Festival had a couple of suggestions, but nothing firm. The local chamber of commerce is checking around and will get back to us. We will check the email and phone messages as we travel to see if any thing turns up. Once we get to the Wal-Mart we can take the Jeep and go on a scouting mission.
As Debra is checking the map for camping spots, she finds the King Arthur Flour Baker’s Store (http://www.kingarthurflour.com/ourstore/ )in Norwich, Vermont. The store is on our route, so we decide this would be a good stop. We get there about noon and check out the store. They have an amazing selection of baking related items, types of flour and ingredients that I never knew existed.

We bought a pound of yeast, some bread and lunch from them.
After lunch we got back on the road. While we are driving along, checking out one post card view after another, our luck kicked in and the phone rang.

The call was from the Homestead Campground Fairfax, VT. They are located about 8 miles from St Albans and the Maple Festival. The woman who called said they are not open for the season yet, but they would be there getting the place ready to open. We could stay if we didn’t need anything but a place to park. They don’t have the water turned on yet so there are no showers or laundry. That’s fine with us, we have a full tank of water and we had figured we would be dry camping in a parking lot somewhere anyway.
“Better lucky than good.”
We arrive at Homestead Campground just before 6:00 PM. No one is in the office, so we pull into an empty site and set up our camp. We will check in at the office in the morning.
