Monday, April 27, 2009 Battling GPSs and the Last Leg to Maine

We get underway just before 8:00 AM from Homestead Campground in Fairfax, Vermont headed for Maine.

Our GPS devices could not agree on the route to Richmond Maine. Debs Garmin, L.B., wanted to go through Boston, the Tom-Tom on my phone just kept trying to calculate a route and “George” the DeLorme map GPS on my laptop wants to take a route through the Mount Washington National Forest.

The Mount Washington route sounds like the most fun to us, so off we go.

Before we got to the National Forest we passed by the Fisher Covered RR Bridge. This bridge, built in 1908, carried the St. Johnsbury & Lamoille County RR over the Lamoille River until recently. The bridge has a full length cupola which allowed the smoke from the steam locomotives out of the bridge.

The trip through the Mount Washington National Forest was a good choice. It was very pretty and even the 8 to 10 miles of dirt road was fun. The dirt road part was in Maine, we think, where they where had torn out the old road and where widening it.

We stopped and made lunch at a road side picnic area in West Paris, Maine. The picnic area was on the Little Androscoggin River and was one of the nicest roadside picnic areas we have seen.

We arrived at our home for the summer, Augusta /Gardner KOA, about 4:00 PM.

The owner, Earl, took us around the park in a golf cart so we could pick a site we liked. We found a good spot up at the top of the hill, away from the pool and store, should be nice and quiet. We got the rig parked and leveled and set up our camp.
